Voting Question: Would you say Australian smoking laws are tough or plain stupid?
1) Not being allowed to smoke, in some jurisdictions in public enclosed spaces (restaurants, pubs, clubs, halls, shops etc)

2) Printing of disgusting images of emphysema, gangrene, tar-lungs, etc on cigarette packages.

3) The banning and phased banning of display of cigarettes at cigarette specialist retailers, retailers etc.

4) The proposed plain packaging for cigarettes.

5) The proposed non-disclosure of amount of miligrams of nicotine in each packet.

The first one, is reasonable, and just, and may lower health risks to others (passive smokers), or may help smokers indirecly kick the habit.

2 is more stupid, I work at a retail store that sells cigarettes, no smokers have quitted due to the printing of gross images, they merely get annoyed. Annoyance isn’t enough to kick to habit, neither for social nor committed smokers (according to my survey of smoker friends and family).

3 is more stupid, merely an annoyance and hindrance to efficiency. Being covered, the staff themselves cannot see them, and take longer to serve cigarette-purchasing customers, and sometimes pull out the wrong packet, leading to a conversation about what a bunch of thickheaded PM’s we have in Australia. Customers and family and friend smokers say that this has no affect on them wanting/not wanting to smoke. Also, if the government thinks it’s doing kids a favour by covering these cigarettes up, they’re wrong. The more probable cause of teen smoking is seeing their friends do it, not seeing the packets on the shelves of a store, hiding it just adds to its elusive attraction.

4- making them plain- Do they government really think we are pig-brained blind slaves to the ploys of consumerism? No, we smoke because of its short term effects- either the alert hit, relaxation, social habit or behavioural habit. Changing packaging will not do anything. Its not how they look but what it does. The more likely effect will be black market cigarettes taking business away from legal tobacco companies- this has happened before.

5- I accepted a call from the Dept of Health and Ageing yesterday, they talked to my dad who is a smoker and purported (as one of their main reasons to quit smoking) that all cigarettes were just as harmful, regardless of the amount of nicotine/tar in them, so they were planning on banning the companies from disclosing this information altogether. How does it help that now smokers cannot even make an informed choice about what they smoke. There is a higher probability that they will keep smoking- then- it’s just a human rights violation the government is committing. I know smoking is bad, but this will kill more than save.

These are my thoughts.

What are your thoughts on these 5 schemes/bills and what evidence or reasons exist for your argument? What other laws/schemes are there in other nations Australia should adopt, rather than the four last ridiculous changes?

Any thoughts on : http://health.ninemsn.com.au/family/quitsmokingcentre/8269549/iceland-considers-prescription-only-cigarettes ?
