Resolved Question: How can an asthmatic stand a smoker – boyfriend help seriously needed?
I have a bad situation at home. I’m dating with my boyfriend for 4 years now, almost perfect relationship. We both are 21, we both live at our parent’s (here it’s normal, the cost of getting your own place is too big and most people move out to move in with their life partners) and we’re both university students. Meanwhile my mum has developed asthma and she’s having problems with more and more things (from dust through washing detergents to perfume), her doctor claims that there’s nothing better than what she’s currently using. I think she should change doctors because he isn’t helping her, but she believes him.
My boyfriend comes from a heavy smoking family. Everything about him smells of cigarettes. He himself smokes very little and he says he’d have no problem quitting entirely if I asked him to, but it’s just pointless because everyone in his family smokes so much and I would lie if I told him it would help. My mum reacts to the odor.
When we’re together at his house, my mum has problems because I return with the cigarette smell all over me. When we’re at my house he brings it here as well. There’s no other meeting place. I can’t tell his family to quit smoking, naturally.
There’s something that looks like a solution, but is also problematic. Basically getting him out of the environment. My family owns a big-ish house divided into 3 separate flats with some shared space (hallway and such). We live in one, my grandparents in the second and we rent the third, but the people will be moving out this summer. We could live there for a symbolic price, but there are at least two problems.
Firstly – I know he’d be happy to live with me, we talked about it, but I’m not sure he’d be willing to move in to my family.
Secondly and more importantly – he has a huge attachment to his mum. He’ll be visiting her a lot and of course I can’t tell him to stop meeting his mother. But then he’d be bringing the cigarette smoke to our house. My grandmother is also asthmatic and has a huge problem with smokers, so in the worst-case scenario the problem would be even deeper.
So, this is the thing. I absolutely refuse to choose either my family or my boyfriend, there has to be some solution that would be comfortable for all. Problem is, I don’t see it. Do you?
