Open Question: smoking and pregnancy?
my sister in law is due this week – she is a smoker 
who did not give up and was given foolish advice from the nurse at the hospital she is having her baby at. She was told that she should not bother quitting because it was too late anyway and that many woman who smoke have healthy babies!
anyway they told her the baby’s head needed to grow another cm….I have just had a baby and thought that babies generally are just putting on weight at this stage not needing to gain head growth….Is something wrong with her baby?
thanx – it is encouraging to know things should be OK. As a non-smoker it is very difficult to understand how someone can make that sort of compromise with their health or baby’s health. Then again if someone said no sugar, not a grain in anything…. I would have had to cut down slowly because ‘cold turkey’ would have been too hard. lol

Resolved Question: 12 week scan, how common is it not to have a heartbeat?
I entered my 13th week of pregnancy yesterday, and have my first proper ultrasound scan on wednesday. I went for a scan at 7 weeks, after I passed a clot, and they showed me the heartbeat and the baby, who was the size of an 8 weeks.
Since then I have had the odd cramp in my tummy, but havent passed any blood or anything, probably just down to growing pains.
The thing is, I cant stop worrying that when we go for the scan on wednesday that there will be no heartbeat. I know I am pretty much out of the woods getting through my 12th week and seeing the heartbeat at an earlier stage, but I am a smoker (please dont judge me, I have been told to cut down not quit due to the stress on the baby, and I KNOW it is awful but it hasnt sunk in that I’m pregnant yet), and scared that by smoking I have ruined my babys heartbeat. DEspite having all the pregnancy symptoms, nausea sickness, sore breasts etc, I still dont feel pregnant, like it hasnt sunk in.
Does anyone know what the probablility of no heartbeat at 12/13 weeks is? Also, did anyone else feel like they werent pregnant at this stage? Thanks

I have cut back from 10 a day to 1 every couple of days FYI and it was under the advice from my GP, the hospital, and my midwife not to stop completely, but to cut down first for the cravings to lessen.Do you not think i know its bad to smoke when im pregnant? of course i do but considering one of you has a penis, and the other is probably about 12 years old dont you dare pass judgement on me. And DAVE S, yeh I am asking pregnancy questions despite not feeling pregnant, I know I’m pregnant but the reality and actual thought that I have a baby inside me hasnt sunk in yet, you tool. Anyway, why is a bloke creeping around on the pregnancy site trying to answer WOMEN’S questions? Thats a bit weird to me like mate.

My boyfriend is 21. He used to be a bum. Not attending school, no job, and a major pot-head. After we started dating, his mother says “he changed.” He stopped pot and he got a job. So basically, his mother favors me because I’m a good influence. But now,after 7 months of getting on track, he’s starting to slack off. He talks about getting married and having kids, but he has no future. He quit his job, still not attending school, and smokes once in awhile behind my back. I keep asking him to go to school but, he says, “yeah, soon. soon.” WHEN? IN 10 YEARS? UGH. how can someone be not motivated for their future. His mother knows I’m studying for the med- field so I feel like his mother is trying to keep me and him together, for future benefits. She even told me that her son has no future if he doesn’t work on it now, so I feel like she wants me on his side for that purpose. I’m not sure, I might be thinking really messed up. And I feel like my boyfriend is in that stage of “I can’t live without you” for that purpose too (future wise). I care about my boyfriend so much, but how can I think about spending the rest of my life with him, if he has no future. What do I do?
